Alexandra Henry
New York, New York

Alexandra Henry finds inspiration in her home of New York City and other major cities that she visits. The urban landscape fascinates her because of the way in which we “create space for ourselves.” Through her works, she hopes to get viewers thinking about their relationship with urban spaces; many of her works lack any human presence exactly for this reason. When she’s not photographing, she enjoys reading and thinking about new projects. She currently works as a producer for Black Magic Films and is producing her own documentary on women street artists. Fun fact: when she was younger, she rode horses and competed in dressage and jumping events.

Excited to announce the success of our first fundraising event for STREET HEROINES, my documentary on the courage and creativity of female graffiti and street artists from around the world. It was a magical night where we held a silent auction of original artwork and unique prints to raise $5k. We also debuted the trailer to the documentary in progress! More on the project here:http://bedfordandbowery.com/2016/04/get-your-spray-can-fix-at-this-pop-up-art-show-for-street-heroines-a-new-history-of-women-street-artists/

Heading to Ecuador for the first time this coming week to participate in an all-female graffiti & street art festival. I will be presenting my photographic and video work while documenting the artists at the same time. After that heading to Mexico City for another artist interview and photography shoot. Excited to end 2015 with a few new adventures!

Just back from Art Basel Miami where I was able to meet up with some fellow Ugallery Artists for brunch! Such an inspiring experience being around so many creative souls. Bringing back the good vibes and will hopefully have some updates to share soon.

While photography is my passion, I have begun to dabble in filmmaking to add depth to my documentary about women street artists. While the project is still driven by still photography, I wanted to share the first video in the series of vignettes I am making. You can watch and learn about MAGRELA, an artists from São Paulo, Brazil here: http://www.alexandrahenry.com/magrela

2013 was off to a slow start, spending lots of time indoors here in New York City to stay away from the cold. However South America was calling again and I flew down to Lima, Peru at the beginning of March to document 'Nosotras Estamos en la Calle' festival for women street artists from all over Latin America and the US. My first time to Lima, it was a whirlwind trip and can't wait to go back and discover more of Peru as a country. The women I met were amazingly talented painters and designers and they beautifuied the very grey and dusty streets of the capital city. For a look at some of the work check out this link: http://www.demotix.com/news/1875375/women-street-artists-paint-walls-lima

This October I've been hanging out in New Mexico enjoying the warm fall and striking southwestern skies. A few weekends back, I took a road trip to Marfa, Texas with my brother to see what this arts-centric small town was all about. More here: http://www.alexandrahenry.com/marfa-texas

In addition to taking photos all around the world, I love to collect records. Another photographer and record collector I know, Eilon Paz, has just featured my record collection on his blog Dust & Grooves. He is about to embark on a road trip across the US looking for more vinyl collectors and make a photo book out of the trip, all in the name of preserving music culture. So check out his site where you will find a perfect mix of photography and art... http://www.dustandgrooves.com/alexandra-henry-ny-ny/

On Tuesday night I attended the awards show for an Instagram competition sponsored by Jameson Whiskey here in São Paulo. Four of my photos were on display out of 5,900 total entries. Though I didn't win the prize (a trip to NYC, how ironic), I saw amazing photos, by extremely talented photographers, of the city I love so much. Here is a link to see some of the finalists. http://mostrasaopaulodefotografia.blogspot.com/ This event was apart of the Mostra São Paulo de Fotografia which took place in the neighborhood of Vila Madalena. Over 300 photographers were on display throughout various venues in the bohemian part of town. To see my Instagram photos, and other shots of Brazil, you can check out my personal blog: http://alexandraincomplete.tumblr.com/ ~Alexandra
