Artist

Pamela Gatens
Hillsboro, West Virginia

Pamela Gatens focuses on brushwork and layering in order to express her love of color. She finds inspiration in everything from beautiful flowers to a smiling cat. Her passion for art is so great that she feels nothing makes her happier than painting. “My colorful paintings come from the true happiness I feel in front of the easel,” she explains. She paints almost every day and especially loves the quiet solitude of the woods. She moved to West Virginia from Los Angeles and loves her new neighbors: birds and bears.

Comments About This Piece

"Woodland Wildflowers" is a poured painting featuring "found" flowers with flowing stems and leaves. Painted flat, instead of on an easel, water is sprayed on the heavily gessoed canvas as colors are poured for the flower petals, stems and leaves. Working quickly, the colors are coaxed into shapes resembling the blooms and foliage. After it dries overnight, extra glazes of more acrylic paint are used to firm up the petals, "find" more blossoms and detail the stems and background. The process is fast paced and exciting with happy accidents hoped for throughout!

This painting is on a gallery wrapped canvas with finished white edges. It comes ready to hang.

Acrylic painting

Acrylic paint was made commercially available in the 1950’s. Acrylic is a fast drying paint that can be diluted with water, but becomes water-resistant when dry. Acrylics can be applied in thin layers and washes to resemble watercolor paints, or they can be applied in thick layers, built up for texture. The main difference between oil and acrylic paint is the drying time. Oil dries slowly, allowing more time to blend colors and apply glazes. Artists who use acrylic paints typically work faster than those who use oils. Additionally, acrylics offer more versatility and are often used for mixed media work. Artists can mix different materials into the paint, such as sand or rice. They can also apply other media on top of the dried acrylic, such as pastel or pen.

Stretched canvas

Canvas is a heavy-duty fabric used as a painting surface. When a canvas artwork is labeled stretched, it means the canvas has been wrapped around a wooden frame (the ''stretcher''). Stretched canvases typically do not require framing.

One-of-a-kind

A one-of-a-kind artwork is a unique piece handmade by the artist. There is only one in existence. The work may be part of a series, however, the piece itself is unlike any other. This piece is available exclusively at UGallery.
