Nancy Goodman Lawrence
Los Angeles, California

Nancy Goodman Lawrence’s modern compositions appear bold and prominent on the surface, but delicate and sophisticated in their perfect sense of balance. The flatness of the work, and the off center compositions seem indicative of a Japanese influence. The work projects a lively sense of order, or an organized randomness, like a Japanese Zen garden. The work also has a strong graphic mid-century feel, with a playful personality. The anthropomorphic shapes interact with one another like the interplay of people on the street, or the pieces of a board game. As is evident from the balanced compositions, and controlled color palette, Nancy spends a lot of time looking and contemplating her next step. As she puts it, “the looking is as important as the doing.”

Comments About This Piece

"Unhinged" is an acrylic painting with ink drawing on a gesso board. It is composed of oval-like shapes that morph into smaller ovals and 3-dimensional curved rectangular shapes. The colors are bold. This is a somewhat surrealistic and playful piece. For hanging purposes, this can be framed or mounted on wood strips and hung frameless.

Acrylic painting

Acrylic paint was made commercially available in the 1950’s. Acrylic is a fast drying paint that can be diluted with water, but becomes water-resistant when dry. Acrylics can be applied in thin layers and washes to resemble watercolor paints, or they can be applied in thick layers, built up for texture. The main difference between oil and acrylic paint is the drying time. Oil dries slowly, allowing more time to blend colors and apply glazes. Artists who use acrylic paints typically work faster than those who use oils. Additionally, acrylics offer more versatility and are often used for mixed media work. Artists can mix different materials into the paint, such as sand or rice. They can also apply other media on top of the dried acrylic, such as pastel or pen.

Composite board

Composite board is a thin, flat panel of compressed wood. If not already framed, most composite board work will require framing.
