Laura Carter
Kemptville, Canada

It's the messy things in life that attract Laura Carter. In a literal sense, she enjoys making a mess with paint by using her hands and fingers in each work. She finds that most of her best work springs from difficult times. Her current work explores a range of emotions and facial expressions through portraits. In the end, she hopes that her art will "look and feel like an emotional story or journey." Fun fact: as an avid art collector, she has filled almost all the empty spaces on her walls.

Laura, It has been a while since I purchased "Waiting on the Day," I have been getting to know the subject. I have her sitting in my kitchen, we have our coffee and other beverages together. At first glance one may think she is fragile, but her strength is stunning. At times she looks wistful, other times hurt and angry, but mostly vengeful, I pity the soul. You do fabulous work!

Hi Shelley, Thank you so much for your message! I really appreciate you taking the time to let me know how the painting made you feel. It's a response like that which really inspires my work! It makes me extremely happy to hear from you. :) All the best, Laura

Hi Laura, Your piece, Weight of the World, has arrived and is wonderful. Thank you so much for creating a piece expressing a thought provoking mix of emotions…somber, wistful, lonely to name a few. The picture online really doesn't do it justice. It is beautiful. I'm thinking of buying your new piece on here to go with it!

Thank you Laura for the quick response and you helped me climb the fine art learning curve. I will now order "House on top of the ridge". Cheers, Frank

Hi Frank, Happy New Year to you as well. Thank you so much for your compliments! Yes the other versions you found are prints only that I sell through that print company. The painting here is the original piece and only available exclusively through Ugallery. Thanks for your interest in my work! Laura

Frank 1/2/2015 | 3:55 PM

Hi Laura- I am new to both fine art and more recent, Ugallery. Having looked thru every available artwork in Ugallery, yours stood out as being one of the best!!! Now may I ask a question- I really like the striking "House on top of the ridge" which is described as an original one of the kind. I also found a website of yours on the internet which has that artwork in canvas, as an art print and also framed. All versions are far less exensive and I assume they are strictly prints of one type of another. Probably a silly question but I hope the one offered on ugallery is THE one and only original of the House on top of the ridge? Please confirm. I love the painting and the size in particular fits exactly in a location that I wish to put it. Thank you for your time and a Happy New Year. Cheers, Frank

Thank you! I love your description of her, she is indeed very haunting. Thank you so much for your purchases!

Hope and Flowers, if I lean close enough she will share her soul. She is beautiful and haunting.

Comments About This Piece

This painting is a tribute to my older sister and mother, who have protected me throughout my years. I always knew that my sister had my back when I was growing up, and any sorrows in my life my mother is the first one I reach out to. I now see the same dynamic with my two daughters, how they protect and look out for each other. When one is hurt, the other is hurt right along with her. This painting is on a gallery wrapped canvas with finished beige edges. It comes ready to hang.

Acrylic painting

Acrylic paint was made commercially available in the 1950’s. Acrylic is a fast drying paint that can be diluted with water, but becomes water-resistant when dry. Acrylics can be applied in thin layers and washes to resemble watercolor paints, or they can be applied in thick layers, built up for texture. The main difference between oil and acrylic paint is the drying time. Oil dries slowly, allowing more time to blend colors and apply glazes. Artists who use acrylic paints typically work faster than those who use oils. Additionally, acrylics offer more versatility and are often used for mixed media work. Artists can mix different materials into the paint, such as sand or rice. They can also apply other media on top of the dried acrylic, such as pastel or pen.

Stretched canvas

Canvas is a heavy-duty fabric used as a painting surface. When a canvas artwork is labeled stretched, it means the canvas has been wrapped around a wooden frame (the ''stretcher''). Stretched canvases typically do not require framing.

A one-of-a-kind artwork is a unique piece handmade by the artist. There is only one in existence. The work may be part of a series, however, the piece itself is unlike any other. This piece is available exclusively at UGallery.
