Kat Silver
Indianapolis, Indiana

Although Kat Silver’s surrealist, Dali-esque landscapes often feature figures with missing limbs and exposed human hearts, they are not ominous. On the contrary, they project something whimsical and enticing within their dream-like plots. They expose the inner conflicts in Kat’s life, which are revealed through the imagery of her dreams and the symbolism encountered in her daily life. These conflicts are universal, demonstrating an obsession with time, choice, and fate. Which path should I choose? When should I pause and reconsider my direction? The figures are headless because they are not mentally present. Dragged down by the mundane aspects of everyday life that distract us, they are missing the magnificent view in front of them. The image of the rabbit has become an important symbol and signature in Kat’s work. For her, the rabbit represents power and taking control of one’s life. The sweet, confident groups of rabbits surround the lost, faceless characters in her paintings. We may not know where we are going, but we have guides along the way if we look for them.

Getting excited about the summer, warmer weather means being able to paint outside and also festival season. I really enjoy setting up my booth and meeting people. I love talking about my work and what it means to me. Its one of my favorite things about doing exhibits and shows, being able to meet people who are interested in art. So please feel free to message me and leave questions and comments about the work you see here. Do you have a favorite? What do you see or notice in the painting? Many of my pieces are narrative , they tell a story. I love hearing people's associations to the symbols and stories in the paintings.

Comments About This Piece

Nature and animals are often a source of inspiration for my work. Lemurs represent family life and relationships. In this piece she is dressed up in an apron and on stage while also wearing roller skates. As a mother of two young children I often feel like I am performing an act (circus/juggling, etc). The house needs to be cleaned, dishes done, dinner cooked, etc and it goes without notice, unless of course I fall behind. "Take a Bow" is about my mother role. I love being a mom but it can be exhausting sometimes. This piece is painted on a cradled wood panel with finished black edges. It comes varnished and ready to hang.

Acrylic painting

Acrylic paint was made commercially available in the 1950’s. Acrylic is a fast drying paint that can be diluted with water, but becomes water-resistant when dry. Acrylics can be applied in thin layers and washes to resemble watercolor paints, or they can be applied in thick layers, built up for texture. The main difference between oil and acrylic paint is the drying time. Oil dries slowly, allowing more time to blend colors and apply glazes. Artists who use acrylic paints typically work faster than those who use oils. Additionally, acrylics offer more versatility and are often used for mixed media work. Artists can mix different materials into the paint, such as sand or rice. They can also apply other media on top of the dried acrylic, such as pastel or pen.

A one-of-a-kind artwork is a unique piece handmade by the artist. There is only one in existence. The work may be part of a series, however, the piece itself is unlike any other. This piece is available exclusively at UGallery.
