Tomo Mori
New York, New York

Tomo Mori finds herself drawn to images that are melting, dripping, streaming and flowing. Her process is extremely meticulous yet spontaneous in its execution, allowing natural instinct to guide the creativity and fluidity of the work. Tomo’s signature technique is collage made of canvas on canvas, a style that adds depth and dimension to her work. When she’s not making art, Tomo likes spending time with her family (and dancing!). Fun fact: When Tomo was in kindergarten, she used to hide under a table and draw when they were supposed go outside and play.

Comments About This Piece

This abstract painting is about sleeping and detoxing our tired souls. I use a traditional mosaic-making technique using canvas fabrics, yet the image is composed like digital pixels. It is part of a series inspired by digital images and the way they are composed of thousands of tiny pixels. My process is extremely meticulous yet spontaneous in its execution, allowing natural instinct to guide the creativity and momentum of the work. I cut many small pieces of canvas, paint them with acrylic paint, and then adhere them to the canvas with tweezers and gel medium.

This piece is on gallery wrapped canvas with finished edges. It comes ready to hang.

Acrylic painting

Acrylic paint was made commercially available in the 1950’s. Acrylic is a fast drying paint that can be diluted with water, but becomes water-resistant when dry. Acrylics can be applied in thin layers and washes to resemble watercolor paints, or they can be applied in thick layers, built up for texture. The main difference between oil and acrylic paint is the drying time. Oil dries slowly, allowing more time to blend colors and apply glazes. Artists who use acrylic paints typically work faster than those who use oils. Additionally, acrylics offer more versatility and are often used for mixed media work. Artists can mix different materials into the paint, such as sand or rice. They can also apply other media on top of the dried acrylic, such as pastel or pen.

Stretched canvas

Canvas is a heavy-duty fabric used as a painting surface. When a canvas artwork is labeled stretched, it means the canvas has been wrapped around a wooden frame (the ''stretcher''). Stretched canvases typically do not require framing.

A one-of-a-kind artwork is a unique piece handmade by the artist. There is only one in existence. The work may be part of a series, however, the piece itself is unlike any other. This piece is available exclusively at UGallery.
