Rebecca Bangs
San Carlos, California

Rebecca Bangs starts each painting with a photo of something that inspires her, usually an image of nature, a flower or a landscape taken while on a hike. She then decides the scale of the piece and the color of the underpainting (usually black). Using liquid acrylics and small bright brushes, she begins layering the many dots that make up her compositions. Most of her finished paintings include about 7 layers of paint. This process takes time, concentration and precision. Pointillism relies on the mind of the viewer to blend the dots of color into a fuller range of tones. As Rebecca places each spot of color next to another, it affects the way the colors appear. In the end, she creates something that up close looks much different than when viewed from far away. The realization that the painting is made up of hundreds of small dots is a wonderful surprise. Rebecca is inspired by the quiet, joyful moments of life facilitated by aesthetic beauty, a hilltop view or a sunset. It is clear that she finds great pleasure and solace is this meticulous artistic process.

Karen, You are most welcome. And, thank you for your kind words. It was such a welcome pleasure to come back into the world of wifi after vacation and find your note in my email. I'm so happy "The Softening" has found a happy home with you! :-) Best regards, Rebecca

I purchased this lovely painting. From a distance, it appears as a fresh, soft bloom; but closeup you can see the thousands of dots making up the greater picture. I can only imagine the amount of time it took to paint this beautiful piece! Thank you so much!

Comments About This Piece

Sometimes the beautiful view while hiking is just off to the side or even behind you. I totally fell in love with this scene as we were coming to end of our hike. There is a big beautiful sky atop the rolling California hill. Warm sunset tones highlight the hilltop oak trees.

This piece is on a cradled wood panel with finished edges. The back of the wood panel is fully gessoed. It comes ready to hang. Would suggest hanging with 2 hooks due to the placement of the support bar in the back.

Acrylic painting

Acrylic paint was made commercially available in the 1950’s. Acrylic is a fast drying paint that can be diluted with water, but becomes water-resistant when dry. Acrylics can be applied in thin layers and washes to resemble watercolor paints, or they can be applied in thick layers, built up for texture. The main difference between oil and acrylic paint is the drying time. Oil dries slowly, allowing more time to blend colors and apply glazes. Artists who use acrylic paints typically work faster than those who use oils. Additionally, acrylics offer more versatility and are often used for mixed media work. Artists can mix different materials into the paint, such as sand or rice. They can also apply other media on top of the dried acrylic, such as pastel or pen.

A one-of-a-kind artwork is a unique piece handmade by the artist. There is only one in existence. The work may be part of a series, however, the piece itself is unlike any other. This piece is available exclusively at UGallery.
