On the Rainy Season Series: It has always been more than just raindrops on a pane of glass. As this series evolves, so too does it cause me to grow with it. From the beginning this series has been one of experimentation, of pushing myself to grow, to see and express ideas in new ways. These pieces speak of environmental degradation and of how overdevelopment affects our perception. They show the world as one sees it separated by a piece of glass—being able to see it, but not be a part of it: are we doomed to be an observer in our own world? A conflict arises, because—as beautiful and atmospheric the rain is—it is damned miserable to be in. That pane of glass protects us from the cold and the wet, and why would we want to be in the rain anyway? Rainy Season continues the theme of environmental activism that appears throughout my work, but in a more personal, conflicted, and nuanced way.
Working steadily on some new rainy season paintings. Here are some studio shots including some of the new pieces, about halfway done: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Sarah-Beth-Goncarova-Fine-Art/192927410735942
I am happy to announce that two of my portraits are to be included in the catalog for the "Reversing the Gaze" exhibition at SOMArts Cultural Center, San Francisco, CA.
Just got word that I've been accepted into the 50-50 show at Pacifica Art Center, juried by esteemed arts writer DeWitt Chang. For the show, the artists will each be making 50 small pieces in 50 days! I feel so honored to be chosen to participate in the show, and it is going to be a wonderful challenge. Wish me luck!
This weekend, Alison Gass, curator at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, will be lecturing on Hunks of Burnin' Love and the other paintings chosen for the Arts on Fire XV exhibit. Juror's talk this Sunday, May 15th, 4-5 pm at Sanchez Art Center, Pacifica.
Dear Jeanne, Thank you so much for the thank you note! It warms my heart to know that you like it so much! Kindly yours, Sarah Beth
Sarah - I received your painting, Sunday III, yesterday and I am thrilled! The pc screen certainly didn't do it justice. I wanted a piece that evoked peace and calm and was also drawn to this one as it reminds me of the northern landscapes where I grew up. Thank you so much for your beautiful work. Jeanne
