Robyn Kruse
San Francisco, California

Robyn Kruse sees personality in the roosters she admires. They have a spirited attitude that strikes her as bold and full of life. She brings out the animals’ marvelous variety through her mixed media artwork, which features chickens and roosters set against abstract backgrounds. The full feathers of the birds are captured in loose impressionist brushstrokes, and the designs behind them are delicately composed using acrylic, ink, paper and other collaged materials. The Japanese influence on her style is apparent in the flattened shapes and slightly off center compositions of her work. Robyn carefully studies the birds she depicts; referencing photographs, the Encyclopedia of Chickens, and The Poultry Handbook in order capture them accurately. The birds in the paintings seem aware and proud of their shining moment as the subject, strutting their stuff and fluffing their feathers for the viewer.

Hi Peter, Thanks for your kind words. I have some larger pieces up on my website - you can check them out here: http://www.robynkruse.com/. I'm not planning on making many more large pieces in the next year because I'll be traveling. Check your email, I sent you some more info. - Robyn

The roosters are progressing vibrantly and with much flare. I love it! I know you make these bigger. Can you put up a 6'x 4' version of something?

Comments About This Piece

I like playing with the rooster's comb, stretching or expanding it to see what will happen. Jack turned out looking like his comb was made of coral. It's painted with acrylic paint and ink on a very heavy Japanese rice paper mounted on a birch wood panel. The piece is varnished and wired to hang.

Acrylic painting

Acrylic paint was made commercially available in the 1950’s. Acrylic is a fast drying paint that can be diluted with water, but becomes water-resistant when dry. Acrylics can be applied in thin layers and washes to resemble watercolor paints, or they can be applied in thick layers, built up for texture. The main difference between oil and acrylic paint is the drying time. Oil dries slowly, allowing more time to blend colors and apply glazes. Artists who use acrylic paints typically work faster than those who use oils. Additionally, acrylics offer more versatility and are often used for mixed media work. Artists can mix different materials into the paint, such as sand or rice. They can also apply other media on top of the dried acrylic, such as pastel or pen.

Paper

Paper is a very common surface for all types of artwork, including photography, printmaking, drawing and painting. Art paper varies in thickness and color. Read the notes section to learn more about the paper used to create this artwork. If not noted as framed, most paper artwork will require framing.

One-of-a-kind

A one-of-a-kind artwork is a unique piece handmade by the artist. There is only one in existence. The work may be part of a series, however, the piece itself is unlike any other. This piece is available exclusively at UGallery.
