This painting started out as a study of light in dark. I wanted to really capture the essence and exuberance of a big city at night. I sought also to create a sense of motion, especially in the cars that are driving by, slightly blurred, the people walking and the snow falling. I tried to work with the largest brush possible in the areas that I was working on and concentrate on using bold, confident, smart brush strokes.
I like the contrast of the bright marquees shining on the left side and the moodiness of the other side of the street, with people trudging through the snow. They are carrying briefcases and purses, so they are probably walking home from a late night in the office. I like imagining what errands the people in the cars are doing. There is something special in the mundane routines of everyday life.
