The pigments on the man and cow are auspicious, indicating they are either about to attend a religious ritual or have already done so. Men will mix vermillion and sandal paste together and smear it on their heads. It is said to clear the thoughts and cool the head. Some trace the cow's sacred status back to Lord Krishna. It is said that he appeared 5000 years ago as "bala gopala," the child who protects cows.
