Fleur Spolidor
San Carlos, California

Fleur Spolidor, a San Francisco based artist, creates both digital and acrylic paintings that set Alice, from Alice in Wonderland, against the backdrop of contemporary San Francisco. The nostalgic widely known figure becomes entwined in the local history, politics, and current events. A fictionalized and surreal extension of Fleur herself, Alice enacts the realities faced by residents of any modern metropolis. While her paintings are representational and topical, the elements of adventure book whimsy and indelible childhood associations offer a lasting personal connection. She reflects her own French background through distinct Parisian delicate humor and traces of the 19th century French political cartoonist, Honoré Daumier.

Comments About This Piece

This piece is about the difficult situation of being an artist in Silicon Valley territory. Alice pushing the victorian house represents the artists and crafts people who are so precious for the San Francisco art scene. On the other side, pushing the Transamerica pyramid is the new economic strength of the bay area, a world of startups developing advanced technologies. To create my work, I begin with layering papers of all sorts, newspaper, wrapping paper, silk paper, patterned paper, etc. In between layers I print or leave in all types of materials, both recycled and found, like plastics, papers, and metals. I like to leave a lot of different textures, from rough to fine, and even smooth, but more often coarse and uneven.

This piece is on a gallery wrapped canvas with finished edges. It comes ready to hang.

Acrylic painting

Acrylic paint was made commercially available in the 1950’s. Acrylic is a fast drying paint that can be diluted with water, but becomes water-resistant when dry. Acrylics can be applied in thin layers and washes to resemble watercolor paints, or they can be applied in thick layers, built up for texture. The main difference between oil and acrylic paint is the drying time. Oil dries slowly, allowing more time to blend colors and apply glazes. Artists who use acrylic paints typically work faster than those who use oils. Additionally, acrylics offer more versatility and are often used for mixed media work. Artists can mix different materials into the paint, such as sand or rice. They can also apply other media on top of the dried acrylic, such as pastel or pen.

Stretched canvas

Canvas is a heavy-duty fabric used as a painting surface. When a canvas artwork is labeled stretched, it means the canvas has been wrapped around a wooden frame (the ''stretcher''). Stretched canvases typically do not require framing.

A one-of-a-kind artwork is a unique piece handmade by the artist. There is only one in existence. The work may be part of a series, however, the piece itself is unlike any other. This piece is available exclusively at UGallery.
