Denise Choppin paints with soft, subtle colors to relate the unique beauty of nature. Her series “Horizons” was inspired by her time on a Gulf Coast barrier island, where she gazed at the line where sky meets water. She currently lives in Florida and finds inspiration in color field works.

Thank you Karen. My pieces can have as many as 60-70 layers of color or acrylic medium which is what gives them the depth.

I am thrilled to have an original work of art for my home. For me the one word that describes this piece is luminescent. The pigments give off so much light. I can see depth in the layers of paint. The gorgeous colors really do shift depending on which angle one views the work. I needed something light and colorful for a special place in my home and this painting livens the space up.

As the light continues to shift with the change of seasons, I've become very interested in attempting to capture this in paint. To that effect, I've used interference paints which contain minute particles of mica. These reflective properties allow the painting to change depending on the point-of-view as well as changing light conditions. Light transforms everything it touches...

Comments About This Piece

Numerous layers of acrylic glazing (paints including iridescent and interference) builds a smooth, luminous surface that abstractly expresses the play of light on sky and water. My inspiration is the horizon line sketched by the sky and the water. "The health of the eye seems to demand a horizon. We are never tired, so long as we can see far enough." (Ralph Waldo Emerson).

This painting is on a cradled wood panel with finished white edges. It comes varnished and ready to hang.

Acrylic painting

Acrylic paint was made commercially available in the 1950’s. Acrylic is a fast drying paint that can be diluted with water, but becomes water-resistant when dry. Acrylics can be applied in thin layers and washes to resemble watercolor paints, or they can be applied in thick layers, built up for texture. The main difference between oil and acrylic paint is the drying time. Oil dries slowly, allowing more time to blend colors and apply glazes. Artists who use acrylic paints typically work faster than those who use oils. Additionally, acrylics offer more versatility and are often used for mixed media work. Artists can mix different materials into the paint, such as sand or rice. They can also apply other media on top of the dried acrylic, such as pastel or pen.

A one-of-a-kind artwork is a unique piece handmade by the artist. There is only one in existence. The work may be part of a series, however, the piece itself is unlike any other. This piece is available exclusively at UGallery.
