Jessica JH Roller
Kettering, Ohio

A few months after Jessica JH Roller and her husband were married, they adopted two young Siamese cats from a shelter -- Tony and Larry. Jessica quickly fell deeply in love with the kittens and says the cats changed her. "They opened my eyes - I started to notice birds, trees, water, color, everything. It was as if the artist inside had been unleashed.” Jessica uses bold colors and primitive linework to create whimsical, expressive portraits. She intends to capture real or imagined moments that are both common and extraordinary. Fun fact: Jessica recently visited the Congaree National Park, which inspired her to try a new color palette.

Custody Battle literally commands the room. She, they, are so intense and though provoking. I had looked at her in the gallery for what seems like forever and finally one day bought her because I knew I would be terribly disappointed if someone else snapped her up before I got off my duff. I am astounded at just how striking it is in person and that background color matches one of the predominant colors in my wood rug. Wow. Good job Lady!

Little Siamese Sugarcube and her mouse are truly a bright and classy looking group in, on and of fantastic colors. You make very enjoyable art! The gold is so gold and the green so perfect a match for it. The blue eyes. Oh my. Nice kitty!

Jessica JH Roller 2/5/2014 | 6:21 PM

Thank you for giving Siamese Sugarcube a home and giving your kitty a friend! You should be getting her any day now! My kitties that are part siamese were found in car lot, abandoned by their mama. They were nursed back to health by a sweet lady and we adopted them 6 months later, we named them Tony and Larry. That was 10.5 years ago and that is when all my painting began! "Sugarcube", my cat character, was most inspired by Tony because he is so cool, so balanced, but still so sweet and cuddly. Larry is equally as great, but he is a special kind of cat that I have had a hard time reducing into an abstracted form, I have only drawn him more realistically.

I have my eye on Siamese Sugarcube With Mouse, 2013. My cat is Lily. Her eyes are as blue as Sugarcube's. She is this purebred cat someone downtown put on the street when a new boyfriend moved in. Every now and then I tell her how far she has come since her street-walking days. She is the most delightful, well mannered little cat. And I am the best cat momma she will ever have. I don't know how old she is but we are growing old together and she needs a wall-hanging from you in her window seat room. Make sense? I thought so.

Hi Jessica, I was thrilled when I found your work. It's very seldom that I run across art that is so unique and that I just LOVE!! I'm amazed at every piece. I'm a painter as well & the quirkiness that we both share is truly a joy. I'll be watching your work for many years to come. Thank you! jill I have your newsletter coming to me.

You are so welcome and Thank you! It was a fun painting to create. Dogs and Squirrels seem so natural together. I just saw a dog earlier this week at the playground that reminded me of Bubba- a lab mix with short little legs and very loved. This one was mixed with a terrier so she had a "beard" too, which was very funny looking and I think would make a great painting as well:)

GinNova 5/9/2013 | 9:20 PM

Hi Jessica - I love my Bubba the Dog! You captured his spirit on canvas perfectly. Thanks for listening and for creating something that makes me smile every time I look at it! It's exactly what i wanted. -Gina

Mary Kay- Thank you for giving me the opportunity to capture your adorable pug! I had so much fun studying the breed and really gained an appreciation for their supreme cuteness! I loved how it turned out and was especially happy with the color. Thank you again! Best, Jessica

Jessica - My painting arrived today (Mary Kay's Pug). I love it! It captures everything I love about pugs - rock solid and unusual in one little package - and it is also a lovely piece of art I will be happy to display. Thank you for taking my wishes into account in this commissioned piece while creating one of your uniquely-you paintings. - Mary Kay

Comments About This Piece

There is a particular American Beech tree that is my favorite tree. So, I painted the tree, with snails. The painting is on a gallery wrapped canvas with finished edges. It comes ready to hang.

Acrylic painting

Acrylic paint was made commercially available in the 1950’s. Acrylic is a fast drying paint that can be diluted with water, but becomes water-resistant when dry. Acrylics can be applied in thin layers and washes to resemble watercolor paints, or they can be applied in thick layers, built up for texture. The main difference between oil and acrylic paint is the drying time. Oil dries slowly, allowing more time to blend colors and apply glazes. Artists who use acrylic paints typically work faster than those who use oils. Additionally, acrylics offer more versatility and are often used for mixed media work. Artists can mix different materials into the paint, such as sand or rice. They can also apply other media on top of the dried acrylic, such as pastel or pen.

Stretched canvas

Canvas is a heavy-duty fabric used as a painting surface. When a canvas artwork is labeled stretched, it means the canvas has been wrapped around a wooden frame (the ''stretcher''). Stretched canvases typically do not require framing.

One-of-a-kind

A one-of-a-kind artwork is a unique piece handmade by the artist. There is only one in existence. The work may be part of a series, however, the piece itself is unlike any other. This piece is available exclusively at UGallery.
