100 Artists Celebrate the Centennial of the London Underground’s Logo
Tom Lubbock, The Independent - 9/24/2008

In celebration of the centennial of the London Underground’s roundel emblem, Art on the Underground has commissioned 100 artists to design posters based on its form, reports The Independent.

The iconic emblem, a circle crossed by a bar, was adopted in 1908 as the general Underground logo when the various line operators wanted to advertise themselves as an integrated service.

The first centennial poster, by Liam Gillick, appeared on Tube platforms last week featuring multiple monochrome roundels in an expanding circular formation, like a receding tunnel. Over the next few months, designs by Bob and Roberta Smith, Susan Hiller, Cornelia Parker, and Jeremy Deller will be shown. All 100 posters will be on view from October 9 through 30 at Rochelle School in Shoreditch.

One of the most famous artworks ever commissioned for the Tube was a poster by Man Ray. It depicts a night sky, with two brightly glowing bodies in it: the Tube roundel and the planet Saturn with its rings.
