Hirst’s $100 Million Skull to Begin World Tour in Amsterdam

8/28/2008
Damien Hirst’s $100 million diamond encrusted skull will begin a world tour at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, reports Bloomberg.
The museum has pledged to clear an entire hall for the skull, titled “For the Love of God.” Hirst will also select a group of paintings from the Rijksmuseum's collection to exhibit in an adjacent hall, including still lifes that depict skulls and other symbols of death.
“The theme of the skull is the aversion of death in art,” said Rijksmuseum spokeswoman Elles Kamphuis. “That is also a popular theme in paintings from the Dutch Golden Age.”
The skull was first exhibited in 2007 at Hirst’s solo show at White Cube gallery in London, where it was offered for $100 million. It was then reported that the artist himself was part of the investment group that bought the sculpture.
The skull will be on display from November 1 to December 15. Kamphuis was unsure of where the work will be exhibited after Amsterdam.
