artist statement

The beauty of a simple apple is captured in my paintings with mixed media. Chaotic backgrounds represent the confusion in life that we have to figure out, and sometimes never do, but there is nothing confusing about a beautiful apple and its simplicity and arbitrary shape. When I walk through San Francisco I see people going to work and working so hard trying to make it. But it often takes over their life and they are unable to take the time to look at the amazing, simple things.

I was born in Honolulu in the spring of 1990 and later moved to northern California. Now a student at BYU, I can often be found in my colorful studio painting after an inspiring day of skimming and surfing. From finger paints in Hawaii to oils in San Francisco and Idaho, I have immersed myself in the world of art at an accelerated rate. I have plein air painted with contemporary masters, took pre-college classes at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco while still in high school, and received numerous awards from my high school and the Academy of Art. And I do not plan to stop anytime soon.

Just like City B, I love City Y, maybe more! Very colorful! Both beautiful pieces! Makana, let me know if/when you have any more like this. Thanks again, Brad.

I am mesmerized by your sad eyed characters and whimsical backgrounds. I joined this site to start selling my own work...but instead I am all wrapped up in these paintings of yours! Thanks! Elizabeth

Makana: Blue Vill is excellent. The blue, flowing base is such a nice organic, and strong base for the more unstructured top section. The painting has movement and a nice balance of color.
